Using Ebooks

My ebooks are available in two formats, Epub and Mobipocket. You can read these formats on a wide variety of computers and portable devices, and the books are unencrypted to give you maximum flexibility.

Why ebooks? Ebooks have many advantages over the paper kind. They are often cheaper, they don't take up much space, and you can get them immediately online without waiting for a delivery or going to a shop. Although netbooks make pretty good ebook readers, dedicated ebook readers arguably make for a more natural experience, and many people also happily read on devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Windows Mobile phones.

When you buy an ebook from this site, you will get an email with a link to download the Epub and/or Mobipocket file. Choose whichever format suits you best. You can read this on your computer (see below), or transfer it to your chosen ebook reader with the help of software provided with your device.

Formats

Epub is rapidly becoming the standard for ebooks, and is supported by all recent ebook readers except the Kindle. You can also get software to read epub books on your computer or mobile device, including:

  • Adobe Digital Editions - a popular reader for Windows and Mac
  • Stanza - reader for iPhone, iPod Touch, Windows and Mac
  • FBReader - reader for Linux and Windows, and Linux-based mobile devices such as Nokia Internet tablets
  • FBReaderJ - a Java-based reader for Android devices

Mobipocket is currently the native format for Kindle; you can also read .mobi books on your desktop computer and a number of mobile devices including Windows Mobile and Symbian phones with the Mobipocket Reader software.

Ebook Reader Devices

The market for these devices is changing rapidly but two of the most popular makes are the Kindle and the Sony eReader family.
